Exploring 150 Years of Winnipeg Transit History

The Canadian Transit Heritage Foundation is delighted to highlight the recent launch of the Winnipeg Transit Photo Collection, now accessible through the City of Winnipeg Archives’ online platform Winnipeg in Focus. This remarkable collection spans nearly 150 years of transit history—from horse-drawn streetcars of the 1880s to modern buses—and includes over 6,000 archival prints, slides, and negatives that have been meticulously preserved and digitized by the City’s archives team. Enthusiasts, researchers, and the general public can now explore hundreds of these images online, with more being added over time, offering a vivid visual journey through Winnipeg’s transit evolution.

This project not only safeguards an invaluable record of civic transportation milestones but also celebrates the people, vehicles, and infrastructure that shaped daily life in Winnipeg. Alongside the online collection, a temporary exhibit at Winnipeg City Hall showcases a curated selection of these historic transit photographs, bringing to life stories from past eras and inviting everyone to reflect on the cultural importance of public transit in Canada’s urban history.
