Canadian Transit Heritage Foundation Featured at CUTA Conference and Transit Show in Montreal

CTHF was a featured participant at the recent Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) annual Conference and Transit Show in Montreal, November 2 to 5, attended by some 600 delegates from across Canada. CTHF involvement included representation by Board and individual members at various conference sessions and events, and a display of information materials at the CUTA registration desk. Key highlights of the conference were participation in the Young Leaders Summit (YLS), a heritage bus display in the Transit Show on Tuesday, November 4th, and a presentation with TransLink and STM members about celebrating transit history in their communities.

CTHF members present included President, Chris Prentice, directors Klaus-Peter Canavan, Nick Hauser, Kevin Nicol and Strategic Advisor, Michael Roschlau and Mario Seneviratne.

Michael led a session entitled “Back to the Future” on Saturday as part of the YLS program, providing insights into what we can learn from past experience in areas such as transit-oriented development, electric buses, and on-demand transit. The YLS included 71 delegates between the ages of 18 and 28, and CTHF was also represented on the YLS program committee.

The heritage bus display was made possible through the efforts of Mario and the co-owners of a 1982 former Sherbrooke and Outaouais GM New Look #8202, Martin Caron, Jean-Sébastien Marcotte, and Félix Parent-Rocheleau. Over 100 people stopped by the display to view the bus and learn about CTHF. CTHF welcomed a number of important industry leaders to the heritage bus display including MiWay Director Maureen Cosyn-Heath, CUTA Chair Dave Reage, CUTA President and CEO and CTHF director Marco D’Angelo, and Neil Malcolm, GRT Acting Director of Transit. President Chris Prentice presented Maureen Cosyn-Heath with a copy of MiWay’s 50th Anniversary book prepared in collaboration with CTHF.

In the afternoon on November 4th, Chris Prentice and Michael Roschlau teamed with Dave Lewin of TransLink and Benoît Clairoux of STM on a presentation “Transit Through Time” which highlighted both TransLink’s and STM’s activities to promote their local transit history. Chris Prentice provided an opening overview of CTHF, our purpose, mission and range of activities we undertake to preserve our transit history and heritage.

Participation in industry events such as the annual CUTA conference and transit show provides an important opportunity to inform people about the purpose and mission of CTHF. CTHF also conducted two youth focus groups on Tuesday, gathering valuable feedback on how young people engage with transit heritage. Special thanks to Mario Seneviratne, the owners of New Look 8202, Dave Lewin, and CUTA staff for their continued support.
